Sundiata, an epic of Old Mali written by D.T Naine is a uniquely expressed cultural story of an African kingdom of Mali. It is the story of those women of a Muslim culture, who were living extremely unfair lives even though they possess very limited power and authority. Women were bound to live under male’s rule and were used just for men’s self purpose. During the time of old Mali, women’s were entirely subservient to men because roles of women were very much unequal to men, were given very limited power and rights, were excluded from any governmental positions and were treated very unfairly as a human being.

Women were not allowed or were forcefully allowed to choose their life partner. “When you left Mali, my brother sent me by force to Sosso to be the wife of Soumaoro, whom he greatly feared. I wept a great deal at the beginning but when I saw that perhaps all was not lost I resigned myself for the time being” (Niane 57). This is the indication that men were the sole authority and they can do anything and everything to prove their power for their own sake. Respected women included witches who were believed to magical and their prophecies were turned out to be true. Sogolan courage to save Sundiata was something very heroic that author talked about in a book. Even though women of Mali were living life being subservient to men, there were still some sorts of power and authority with the women population.

It is a sad part of our human cultural beliefs that, still in most part of the world women are viewed as subordinate to men in some form of shape and size. There is a long history behind these sorts of discrimination. Even if we look back to history of the United States, there are many inhuman cases of gender related and racial discrimination.
