I decided to chose Object 1: Vincent van Gogh, Café Terrace at Night, 1888, oil on canvas, KröllerMuller Museum, Otterlo for my design summary/formal analysis. Two elements utilized in this piece of art are texture and color. Texture is the surface quality of a work (Dewitte, Larmann, Shields 62). Color is the optical effect caused when reflected white light of the spectrum is divided into a separate wavelength (Dewitte, Larmann, Shields 92).

The color temperature varies from warm to cold. The warmness would act as the bright citrus colors of the cafe, while the coldness would act as the blue and dark purple sky. The psychology of colors varies in this painting as well. The cafe contains colors of happiness such as pale yellow, citron green, and sunkiss orange. These colors give the cafe a welcoming and vibrant vibe, which attracts people to stop in and enjoy themselves. The buildings in the shadows cast a dreary vibe due to its darkness. This could mean that this specific location is quite depressing and the only place to escape this lifeless hole is the cafe (also known as the “mecca” for the south of France).
