Introduction Evaluations in social work practices are needed to report the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of psychological intervention used in the field. The single subject research design (SSRD) is an empirical measurement of a client’s functioning over a time span. This SSRD tool will measure the client’s functioning before, during and after the intervention (Jordan & Franklin, 2011). This paper will describe the client, establish a baseline, track two targeted goals over 30 days and applied interventions, analyze the results of the study and address the studies limitations. Case summary Sharon is a 48-year-old Caucasian women.…
Evidence based practice is the conscientious use of current best evidence in making decisions about client/ patient care. Social Workers use evidence based practice to assess the data and research of successful treatment. Evidence based practice provides social workers with successful evidence to share accurate data with the client to make a more informed decision about what is best to aid the client. This paper will discuss evidence-based practice and why it is important to social workers. A well as several criticisms of the evidence-based approach and my opinion on each criticism.…

His parents have been observing that he also shows signs of being depressed.…
For each client there is an identified lead case manager who coordinates the necessary care and referrals, assisting them in navigating difficult systems in social and health care spheres. The lead case managers must hold shared decision making with the client and all other contributors and organizations involved or invested in the client’s wellbeing (Department for Communities and Social Inclusion, 2013). The individuals that make up this team must also have a willingness to learn and expand their knowledge into diverse disciplines, ultimately working together as educational and supportive units (Kathol, Perez, & Cohen, 2010). Supervisors must develop comprehensive training programs so that professionals will be able to address both medical and mental health barriers for their clients. These case managers must maintain a close working relationship with either an allocated physician or physician team, where they will conduct regular case reviews in order to ensure the appropriate interventions are introduced (Department for Communities and Social Inclusion, 2013).…
Their first task is to meet with the client and their family and perform a psychosocial assessment of the client and their family’s needs. This assessment is an evaluation of the client’s physical, mental, and emotional needs. The questions asked during the assessment provide a picture of the client’s overall needs, as well as what the family needs. It is used to create a treatment plan that will best suit everyone involved with the client and family. Social workers in this field feel like sometimes it is difficult to get the families involved in the…
The social workers position during treatment planning is to help the client coordinate her overall treatment, connect the client with the needed services, as well as to advocate for the client if needed even in the community such as with financial assistance, housing, and transportation. (5) The clinician would want to include that incorporating the family in treatment planning will also allow the family to learn more and educate themselves about the mental illness that the client is…

This biopsychosocial-spiritual assessment is a vital tool for social workers to understand each client 's subjective reality and their unique challenges and difficulties, as well as their strengths and resources (Simpson, Williams, & Segall 2007). For example, while social workers often view trauma and stress from an emotional angle, they must also know that these conditions can have profound biological influences on a client (Berzoff & Drisko, 2015). Likewise, using a biopsychosocial-spiritual framework can help social workers understand why two clients will differ even if they have the same diagnoses and similar cultural and social backgrounds (Berzhoff & Driscko, 2015). Finally, Simpson et al. (2007) point out that sociocultural systems are a vital part of how social workers empathize and connect with clients ' unique experiences.…

The most two well-establish, commonly used in clinical assessment of MDD are the two diagnostic system: International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th revision (ICD-10) (World Health Organization, 2016) and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition (DSM-5) (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). First of all, it is noteworthy to mention that the umbrella term “Depressive Disorders” include a number of affective disorders, such as major depression (i.e., MDD), dysthymia, medication/substance-induced depression, depression due to another medical condition. Secondly, all depressive disorders as listed in DSM-V (APA, 2013) share the common features of depressed and/or irritable mood,…

Although I am focused on mental health that is not the only thing I want to learn about or practice. I am interested in all aspects of social work, including the historical, cultural, economic, and political areas. There are always multiple factors that join together to create an individual’s disadvantage, and I hope to be able to learn ways to identify and improve those factors. I am happily awaiting to learn from Dr. Margaret Severson about mental health and psychopathology, and well as the impact of mental health from Dr. Amy Mendenhall. My hopes relate to my future plans as a social worker by giving me a well-rounded education of social work while being able to focus on my main area of interest, mental health.…
Before we can begin to determine the advantages and disadvantages of diagnosis, we must first understand what is needed to make a diagnosis. In order to make the diagnosis, several elements are taken into consideration. The information gained from the clinical interview, any tests and the clinician’s observations of the individual are compiled together to determine whether the individual’s psychological symptoms match a known disorder (Comer, 2014). In addition, clinicians should take into consideration an individual’s culture. Focusing on whether or not the individual is an immigrant, cultural factors, and the individual’s acculturation into the dominant culture (Comer, 2014).…

There are many disadvantages with the DSM 5; “(1) it counters strength-based perspective, (2) it is pathologizing, (3) it is individualizing, ignoring social contribution such as oppression, poverty, (4) it is stigmatizing/labeling and (5) it forms socially constructed views of mental illness” (Regehr & Glancy, 2014, p. 93). However, I believe that I will be able to use these assessments to coincide with my social work to provide the best opportunities for my clients. Mental health is an area where such assessments like the DSM 5 are used and if I am knowledgeable of the advantages along with the disadvantages it will give me a position to advocate for my client when decisions are made for them that place them into a…
