Dry Tortugas Research Paper

Superior Essays
Many people have been fascinated by Dry Tortugas because of its magnificent aquatic life and historic value. Although this park is a beautiful site to see, it is encountered with various problems. Dry Tortugas has many unique qualities; and for that reason, the park is doing all it can to preserve its significance.
Dry Tortugas is located 70 miles off the coast of Key West, Florida (Dustin and Wolff, 3). Dry Tortugas consists of 6 islands: Garden Key, Loggerhead Key, Bush Key, Hospital Key, Middle Key, and East Key. "A key is a low elevation island formed on top of an ancient coral reef" (National Park Service). Garden Key is home to the abandoned coastal fort of the U.S. military and Loggerhead Key is where Harbor Light Lighthouse resides. Its light is powerful that it can be seen from 20 miles away. Bush Key is the area in which the Sooty birds nest and Middle Key is a small area of storm washed land (National Park Service).
Dry Tortugas was founded by Juan Ponce De Leon in 1513.

Just north of Key Biscayne in sunny Miami, Virgina Key is a protected barrier Island in the Atlantic ocean. Consisting of 863 acres of land, it was once much larger, extending into the Ft. Lauderdale area. Between 1835 and 1838 hurricanes eroded the beach, creating inlets and dividing the island in two. The other portion became Fisher Island, which sits at the southernmost tip of Miami Beach. Virgina Key was a part of the civil rights movement.…

The Trichechus manatus is on the endangered species list, but because the public has been educated and practices are in place to help these herbivores, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife submitted a proposal in January, 2016 to have the Florida Manatee removed from the endangered list (U.S. Fish & Wildlife, 2016). The history of Easter Island, its statues and its peoples, has long been shrouded in mystery. Some have suggested that aliens marooned on earth planted the statues as signals to their fellow aliens to rescue them. Others have said that the statues were constructed by a great race of guilders that were stranded on the island and built them before being rescued. Still others are convinced that an ancient society with the capability of flight constructed them along with the Nazca lines in Peru. However new evidence based on pollen analysis supports a much simpler theory, that the Easter Island inhabitants destroyed their own society through deforestation.…
