Dry needling involves the insertion of needles into tender points in the body without the injection of any substance. It is used to treat painful musculoskeletal disorders. The more common approaches, which are best supported by research, target myofascial trigger points. Dry needling and trigger point theory emerged from the use of injections of anesthetic to treat painful musculoskeletal conditions. Myofascial pain, or “trigger point” pain is often the source of chronic pain and dysfunction, yet it is widely ignored by many health care providers. For this reason, patients are assessed with a detailed and specific muscle examination to determine an individualized treatment plan that may include dry needling procedures.
