The History of MADD and the Drunk Driving Movement

Driving while intoxicated is an issue surrounding many in our society since the invention of the automobile. Although it’s been the topic of countless conversations over the decades, it was consequently the elephant in the room that no one spoke of. However, with the emergence of different awareness movements, such as the victims of drunk driving in the late 1970s and early 1980s, (Rid) Remove Intoxicated Drivers and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (Madd), society could no longer turn a blind eye with the full scale awareness of these movements. The initial idea for Mothers against Drunk Drivers came about because of the loss of Candy Lightener’s daughter Cari lightner, a 13-year-old who

Requiring these citizens to use these devices to start their vehicle, as well as every 15 minutes after while in the vehicle, (ABI) serves as an interest group standing firm in support of the restaurant and beverage industry. The American beverage institute is very forthcoming in their opposition, saying that the ignition interlock device would hinder citizens from enjoying alcoholic beverages at social gatherings or after hard day at work. (Maplight) another opposing view comes from the standpoint that the victim movement of drunk driving was not because of an occurrence of intoxicated driving because unfortunately that was happening long before the emergence of MADD but instead stems the feeling of loss, emptiness and injustice that needs to be resolved. (Reinarman, 1988, p. 91) “Reinarman (1988) suggest from the MADD perspective, then, the aperture of attribution for all the suffering in social cost that they claim are caused by drinking driving is constricted; only the loan deviant comes into focus. Such construction, I submit explains Industry support for the movement.” (p.105) Criminologist have said that victim impact panels have a higher probability for success because of the social situation the offenders are …show more content…
I tried to give a show of the monumental impact that the MADD has had on our society by their use of campaigning for laws to be passed that would ultimately put more severe sanctions on driving while intoxicated and consumption of alcohol by minors. MADD came about because of two women’s courage to not just stand by and allow their children to become just a another statistic in the report instead they became whistleblowers on driving while intoxicated, changing public opinion, giving voices to victims who could no longer speak for themselves, and giving support to their families. Although there will always be drinking and driving, a vast majority of citizens think twice not only because of the consequences that are now in place but because of the risk a loss of life that can unfortunately and become the ultimate consequence if you choose to drink and drive or ride with someone that has been drinking. This is because of the trailblazing perseverance of the Organization

MADD is an organization to help reduce drunk driving traffic fatalities. There are numerous anti drunk driving commercials out there, but I believe this on is the best, which is named Best MADD Anti DUI commercial ever on YouTube. The video contains ethos by stating a few words at the beginning of the video of how much MADD has made a change, but they are honest in saying they still have a long way to go.…

There is also the law that has helped abolish impaired driving, and MADD has made changes to the legislation that helps societies feel more safe in their communities. MADD’s sanctions have made differences in society, as impaired driving is not condoned therefore an individual will be penalized by law if caught doing so. Could installing devices in all new cars to keep drunk drivers from starting the engine, as car companies may do over the next 15 years, stop as many as 85% of all the car deaths caused by alcohol in the United States? Some reports say tens of thousands of lives could be saved, as well as billions of dollars lost from costs related to injuries. Current Technology--an IID--and the Law Many states, including Minnesota, Michigan, Florida, and Iowa mandate an interlock device for those who have been convicted of driving with a blood alcohol concentration above a certain level. In Minnesota, Florida, Iowa, and Michigan, it is .16%. Some other states require the device, called an IID, which is a breathalyzer which keeps someone under the influence of alcohol from driving, after a second conviction, although there are some states that have no such requirement.…

Precipitated by the death of the founders child at the hands of a repeat drunken driving offender, MADD began as a grassroots activist movement (Phillips,Melody) created on September 5th of 1980 from the scolded mind of Candace Lightner. In 1980, an intoxicated hit-and-run driver with four previous drunk driving convictions struck and killed Cari Lightner while she walked with a friend in the bike line in California (Phillips, Melody). While traditional murder at the time was usually handled by jail time or execution, impaired drivers typically only received a judicial “slap on the wrist” for driving while intoxicated, even when the action resulted in fatalities (Phillips,…

What makes this organization especially worth highlighting is how its founding stems directly from personal experience with the issue at hand, namely injury and death being the products of drunk driving incidents, while its evolution over time leads to a broadening and shifting of goals and focus to the point of alienating a key founder. Currently, according to the MADD website, MADD operates under the mission statement “to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking”. Without even navigating further into the website, one can tell instantly that, at least in this medium, MADD is heavily emphasizing the victim side of the drunk driving issue and their support for these victims. For instance, the tagline for the website is “no more victims” and one can find a “voices of victims” section which scrolls through several images of victims of drunk or drugged driving and related incidents and provides the option to then read the stories behind each of these images (MADD).…

With this Act in place, any state that allowed person under the age of 21 year old to purchase and publicly possess alcohol was punished by having its annual federal highway allotment cut by ten percent. Many organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving state that since the installation of a MLDA-21, fatally injured drivers ages 16-20, with positive Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) as lowered from 61 percent in 1982 to 31 percent in 1995. They also argue that a raise in the MLDA reduces drinking, problematic drinking, drinking and driving, and alcohol-related crashes among young people. The article titled “Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention & Policy” written by Adam Barry, Michael Stellefson, and Conrad Woolsey goes on to talk about the fact that compared to legal drinkers, underage drinkers are significantly less confident to perform responsible drinking behaviors during their next drinking episode and significantly lower intention to perform responsible drinking behaviors the next time they consume alcohol. That is where the Amethyst Initiative come…
