Lisa McGirr’s book, The War on Alcohol: Prohibition and the Rise of the American State, argues that alcohol was a major part of the New Deal and previous scholarship concerning alcohol has marginalized the subject or emphasized the failure of Prohibition. Contrary to this scholarship, McGirr claims the opposite, “that beer took its place in the vanguard of New Deal measures” (xiii). Referring to the title of her book, McGirr convincingly proves that the war on alcohol was waged on African Americans, the immigrant population, and against poor white communities, most notably seen through the rise of the second Ku Klux Klan. While Prohibition was significant in leading to the election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the very discrimination that…

Poetry is often called literature that provides windows to the soul. This is because many poets instill their own experiences into their works. Yusef Komunyakaa is one of those poets. Through his poems, he reveals the darkness, pain, and atrocities of war he experienced when he served in Vietnam, as well as his experiences growing up in the deep south when the KKK was in power and through the start of the Civil Rights Movement. Growing up in a time of turmoil, and as a African American man in a principally racist America, Komunyakaa 's works shed light on conflict as well as it’s resolution.…

“Fishhawk” was the first poem of the Classic of Poetry, the earliest poetry collection of East Asia (p.1322). In contrast to many poems in the “Airs of Domain” that propagated Confucianism, “Fishhawk” is a simple love poem. The poem revolves around a young man who was “tormented by his desire for a girl”(p.1322). While this poem is labeled as a “romantic folk song”(p.1322), the good use of literary elements, syntax, and language added a bit of tint to the love story.…

My interpretation is based off of her statement from her sonnet. Egan statement, "nothing good happens when you drink too much” is a true statement because of people have the tendency to regret their actions the morning after a night of drinking.…

Poets use intimate stories to express broad concepts that relate to us and the world around us. The first of two poems I’m going to show convey this message is John Foulchers poem ‘HARRY WOOD’ he shows survival, sacrifice and regret survival through an anecdote of an old retired miner who started his life in poverty and struggled to give his family a better future. The second poem ‘Joanna’s bedroom’ by Steven Herrick shows concepts of unconditional love, ups and downs and emotions through a couple’s destructive battle. Survival is human instinct. It flows through us, can force us to do terrible things and pushes some of us to do the impossible.…

They describe how his companion refuses the speaker’s closeness and consolation. The verses hint once again at their austere attitudes, as the personification of the speaker’s consolation and the other’s wistfulness makes it appear as if they are separated from their emotions. At first glance, his wish to comfort her seems strange in the context of his earlier mentioned gratitude (v. 1). First here, it is possible to understand the two previous verses. The speaker has found someone as lonely and unable to relate to others as himself and their shared sorrow is the reason for both his gratitude and his urge to console his companion.…

The poem could be considered symbolic as referring to an evangelical standpoint. This poem is a reference to the Great Commission which is contained in the Bible verse Matthew 28:16-20, which states, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. (The Holy Bible) Another symbolic reference is the comparison of the Lamb of God and the lamb or sheep in the Lords Flock. This type of symbolism can be seen in the phrase, “I a child & thou a lamb, we are called by his name.”…
