This is seen in the story, when Jeffrey and his mom go to the hospital in Philly and Steven convinces himself that his brother is fine, and is having a great time. For example, in the story, it says, “Doctors are wrong all the time. You hear about these malpractice things every day where people get medicine that’s not even theirs. I bet Jeffy’s down there in Philly, guzzling cheesesteaks, having a great time, getting waited on hand and foot by mom…” (Sonnenblick 52). This is significant because Steven convinces himself that Jeffrey’s illness is a mistake, so him and his family don’t have to go through it and he doesn’t have a chance of losing his brother. It is easier to deny that his brother is sick than to believe he is. Another example from the story, is when Jeffrey and his mom return home and Steven assumes that it was all a mistake. In the text it says “So, Mom, everything’s OK right? This whole cancer mistake is all sorted out. She looked at me like I had just asked for a cigarette. Steven, this is no time to joke. Your brother is a very, very sick boy” ( Sonnenblick 66). This shows Steven is in denial because he doesn’t want himself and his family to have to face Jefferey’s illness. For example, in the story, it says, “I came up with a new bargain with God: ‘If you make Jeffrey better, I won’t go to this dance“(Sonnenblick 94). It is important to notice that Steven is bargaining with God. He thinks if he gets God to take something he likes from him that he will give him something he wants, like making Jeffrey better. Another example in the story, is when Steven tries bargaining with God saying if he never hits Jeffrey he will get better. In the it says, ”If I never hit Jeffrey again, then he’ll get better” (Sonnenblick 80). This is significant because Steven thinks it is helping him because by taking stuff that he enjoys or does from him.He thinks that maybe it will help Jeffrey get better by limiting his
