Drum Major Essay

1.) The most important function of the drum major is to be a leader along with having a confident, professional attitude. It is important to be respected by both my peers and staff in order for the ensemble to function. One must have the ability to inspire, assist and teach while in command with a desire for the marching band to succeed. The drum major should have an exceptional understanding of time and rhythm and effectively understand marching in order to help other students. They must always look to improve and accept the criticism given to them for well-performing group. They must take initiative and be sensitive to the needs of the entire band. They have to work well with both the band director and the band, and must know how to gain and hold the attention of a group while having good problem-solving skills. Spirit and pride must be a priority for all members of the band. The band must be kept at a high energy level, a positive attitude is the most important way to effect the band. The drum major should be a role model and offer compliments as well as criticism to maintain positive attitude and reach maximum helpfulness. Team building exercises like spirit days or sectional parties are helpful in the social aspect of a positive vibe and help create the sense of belonging in a group. Motivation should be a priority, especially for the drum major to portray. It is their job to inspire and lead the rest of the band and make sure members of the band always aim to achieve their best. There should never be an “off break” from the season, drum majors are always professional and positive about their leadership position. The group will reflect the drum major’s attitude and energy.
