What qualities do you think a student leader should possess? I feel like a student leader is very much like a regular leader, just younger and, usually, under direction from an adult. I could go into history about this, especially about Machiavelli’s writing about being a decent leader, but I feel in this marching band, it’s different. Being a student leader means having somewhat strict orders, but having fun with your peers as well. You do want them to follow orders, but not so much to where band isn’t fun anymore. A leader should possess the qualities of being loud when needed, having empathy for others, they should have the ability to help others whether it’s musically, visually, or personally. They should be flexible within their abilities on instruments and should be near expert on reading music. Peer leaders should be respectful for all sections within whatever they’re doing, but they should also have the guts to make their opinions/ reasonings clear, especially when they are trying to work.
2.) In your opinion, what should the responsibilities of a Drum Major include? Well, obviously there’s keeping tempo. It’s the most important part of a Drum Major’s job. Otherwise, a Drum Major should be prepared to help other sections or

For example, the band can improve greatly, and have a really positive attitude about it. But once we lose points in competitions, I’ve seen some individuals really let it get it to them. And they spread that extremely negative attitude to the other band kids. A bad attitude in the band can really affect performance quality. I do also think that when students are not allowed to point out problems in the performance that leadership and staff cannot see, it just drags us down horribly. When the band all works together, we have a better chance of learning and improving our show. Basically, I do think general respect and cooperation are needed in this
