If the mother is doing the drugs before she gives birth to the child then the child could come out and start having withdrawals from that certain drug. “The law says an assault or homicide charge can be laid if a child is born addicted to or harmed by illegal drugs taken by its mother or it does as a result of the use.” If the mother is drinking before she gives birth then it can result of the baby being born premature, small, and underweight, have problems eating, sleeping, seeing and hearing, paying attention, following directions, learning in school, needing special teachers and schools, having trouble getting along with others and controlling their behaviors, and needing expensive and serious medical care their entire lives.
The last effect of a mother doing drugs while pregnant can result in Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) or Child Protective Services (CPS) getting involved. The way that they could get involved is by the mother giving birth and the hospital getting a test done to see if there are drugs in the baby’s system, which they do in most hospitals now. Another way that they could get involved is by the child already being born and then the mother goes to jail, so DCFS can come in and take the baby and either give he/she to a family member or a foster
