In Born Blue, the reader learns that the use of drugs do not solve problems, but create new ones. Drugs and alcohol have been misused by almost all of Leshaya's friends and family as a temporary fix for their issues. “ Your mama wasn’t sick with amnesia. She’s a drug addict, she takes drugs-Heroin” (38,Nolan). As a result of all the bad influences in her life, like her Mama Linda, Leshaya was steered into officially becoming a party girl at the age of twelve. Leshaya used drugs to get away from reality and to hide the fact that she doesn’t have any family or anyone that loves her. However, she soon realizes that drugs are the gateway to new complications.
