It does not matter how isolated an individual is when a choice to engage in behavior, such as drug use, their choice negatively impacts the individuals that love and care for that individual, their family, their coworkers, the community, and society as a whole. Almost a year ago, my nephew took his own life while under the influence of alcohol, cocaine, and prescription medication. Individuals that are under the influence are often times not able to make rational decisions that they would typically make do to their thought process being impacted by the substance. An individual that is under the influence of a drug may hallucinate causing the individual to act paranoid or violent towards others. Drug use and crime often times goes hand in hand. Individuals engage in criminal activity to obtain drugs and gangs fight over territories to sell drugs. An addiction has the ability to increase an individual’s likeness to participate in risky behaviors that expose them to HIV such as using and sharing needles and engaging in unsafe sex
