Excessive alcohol consumption includes binge drinking (4 or more drinks for women and 5 or more for men during a single occasion), heavy drinking (8 or more drinks for women and 15 or more for men per week) and any drinking by people younger than 21 and pregnant women (CDC, 2016). Prescription drug misuse includes taking a drug in a manner other than prescribed and taking drugs that have been prescribed to another person. I think among the four Health Behaviors variables, alcohol and drug use has the strongest impact on one’s health. Excessive alcohol consumption has both immediate effect and chronic effect on health. Immediate effects increase the risk of harmful health condition such as injuries due to vehicle accidents, STDs due to risky sexual behavior and so on. Cardiovascular diseases, cancers, mental health problems, alcohol dependence are the chronic health problems of alcohol (CDC, 2016). Similarly, drug use also has cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and lung disease. Some of these effects occur when drugs are used at high doses or after prolonged use; however, some may occur after just one use (NIH, 2012).
