There is a substantial amount of violence in Colombia and while drug cartels are brutal, paramilitary groups and bigger organized crime institutions contribute to more of the violence, the cartels are simply their scapegoats which is something that is not always noted ( Human J3). Another difference is that between drug trafficking and drug selling. Drug trafficking is the transportation and distributing of drugs between sellers while drug selling is going to people and towns, pushing the product that was received from the people trafficking the drugs (Calderon B1). One other thing that is not always apparent is the difference between drug trafficking and organized crime. Once again drug trafficking is simply the transportation and organization of drugs. Organized crime, however, is the extortion and exploitation of political figures and civilians (Calderon B3). Drug trafficking can, however, be funding for organized crime (Calderon …show more content…
The production of drugs in Colombia, especially cocaine, uses countless numbers of chemicals to produce. Studies show that "As a result of cocaine production, 14,800 tons of dangerous chemicals are discharged into the amazon river basin each year." (D1). 14,800 tons of chemicals are destroying the amazon river as a result of drugs. The production of drugs would not occur without drug trafficking and therefore drug trafficking is playing a large role in destroying the environment. By dumping that many chemicals into the amazon river every year, water supplies that animals drink out of are being destroyed and polluted, leaving the animals with nowhere to quench their thirst. Many species of animals have been endangered because of this process. (Drug Enforcement). The pollution could also potentially affect water supplies that people use. If some areas where poverty thrives get their water from the river, they are now also taking in 14, 800 tons of dangerous

Pre-Columbian Period Pre-Columbian Colombia, was host to a broad range of indigenous peoples, with a population size ranging from 850,000 to four million – according to historian estimates. Additionally, these indigenous populations had varying levels of civilization: on one end of the spectrum, there existed hunter-gatherer groups living in the tropical rain forest, and on the other advanced groups such as the Tairona and Muisca, living at high altitudes. In between, there were several organized indigenous groups called chiefdoms, that were frequently at war with each other and supposedly practiced cannibalism. The Tairona, one of the two more advanced civilized groups, inhabited the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and had complex societies, with chiefdom hierarchies, stone road systems, advanced agricultural (composed of irrigational and terrace systems), well established trading systems, and artifact production.…

The genesis of all drug cartels in Mexico trace to a Mexican Judicial Federal Police agent Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo also known as "The Godfather". He was the founder of the “Guadalajara Cartel”, which controlled all illegal drug trade in and around Mexico’s border in 1980. Since 2006, the Mexican military have intervened with a goal of stopping all drug-related violence consisting inside Mexico’s borders, leaving drug trafficking a problem to the United States. The ongoing fight against drug cartels has been hampered by rampant corruption among local and federal police and politicians, some of whom have actively worked with cartels for their own benefit.₁ Recently, Mexico’s continuation of drug trafficking to the United States has been increasing drug use for minors and has caused more violence. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 20 million Americans aged 12 or older used an illegal drug in the past 30 days.₂ As the United States of America is the world 's largest consumer of cocaine, as well as of other illegal drugs, their demand is what motivates the drug business, and the main goal of Mexican Drug Cartels is to introduce narcotics into the US.₃ It has been estimated by analysts that anywhere from $13.6 billion to $49.4 billion is being earned by Mexico’s drug trade annually.…

While going through various articles on the illegal trade going on in the southern border between Mexico and united states of America, I realized that both countries have suffered more so the young people because they form a larger percentage of the people involved in these illegal trades (drug and human trafficking).as the drug barons get rich everyday, young citizens from both countries get disadvantaged. They are the ones that face the law instead of the ‘big thieves’ –the drug barons. Human trafficking is another big issue; America has recorded high number of illegal immigrants in the recent past. The southern border has become too porous. It is for this reason that the recently elected president of the United States of America came up…

Outside of Afghanistan and Iraq, Colombia ranks first in the world in improvised explosive devices (IED) incidents. In addition to kidnapping, in the late 1970s, the FARC began trafficking cocaine to fund its activities, a practice that facilitated its rapid growth throughout the 1980s. The FARC’s newfound wealth and its provision of social services attracted a large number of new members who sought to escape the increasing poverty levels in Colombia. Profits from drug-related activities yielded millions of dollars, allowing the FARC to expand from 6,000 members in 1982 to about 20,000 fighters at their peak in the early 2000s. An estimate released in 2012 by the Colombian Attorney General’s Office put the FARC’s annual income, including drugs and all other illicit activities, at $1.1 billion.…
