Today, drugs are one of the most negatively profiled things in the world. One of the biggest exporters in the world happens to be Colombia. Their influence in the drug trade reaches all the way back to the 1980's when brutal cartels were dominant. Today, Colombia's trade still exists and is as strong as ever. The production of drugs in Colombia, especially cocaine, uses countless numbers of chemicals to produce. Studies show that "As a result of cocaine production, 14,800 tons of dangerous chemicals are discharged into the amazon river basin each year." The production of drugs would not occur without drug trafficking and therefore drug trafficking is playing a large role in destroying the environment. By dumping that many chemicals into the amazon river every year, water supplies that animals drink out of are being destroyed and polluted, leaving the animals with nowhere to quench their thirst. Many species of animals have been endangered because of this process. (Drug Enforcement). The pollution could also potentially affect water supplies that people use. If some areas where poverty thrives get their water from the river, they are now also taking in 14, 800 tons of dangerous
