Lyle Alzado, a former defensive end of the Oakland Raiders, was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma. He said that the sickness was triggered by using anabolic steroids (Courson). Athletes say they use steroids to seek improvement in their athletic performance, yet may not realize the long-term effects of using steroids and other drugs. There should be more drug testing in high school sports because young children and teens are influenced by their so-called “childhood heroes” to use drugs. Steroids destroy the hormonal system. In men, it causes infertility, breast development, shrinking of the testicles, and male-pattern baldness. In women, it causes the enlargement of the clitoris, excessive growth of body hair, and male-pattern baldness. In the musculoskeletal system of humans, if you take it at a young age, you will develop a short stature. Also, your tendons could rupture. In the cardiovascular system, you can have an increase in LDL, decrease in HDL, high blood pressure, heart attacks, and possibly the enlargement of the heart’s left ventricle. In your liver, you can develop a cancer and, or a tumor. Your skin may also develop severe acne, and cysts, oily scalp, jaundice, and fluid retention. Infections may also be found in your body. Some infections that you develop after taking steroids is HIV/ AIDS and, or hepatitis. Lastly, some psychiatric effects one may encounter are rage, aggression, mania, and delusions (Rains 104). Many former athletes have come out saying they used and later were diagnosed with other sicknesses such as cancer and lymphoma.
