Drugs and Athletes
In this paper I will include several different topics on the subject of Drug Testing Athletes. These subjects include, college athletes being drug tested, the different types of drugs that are used in all athletes, why drug use is a problem in sports, how to determine if an athletes is using drugs, drug testing polices, potential side effects, many historical use of drugs, and two different personal stories that have happened to former athletes. All athletes know that doing illegal or banned drugs of any kind can ruin their health, their eligibility to play sports, their reputation, and their ability to pursue a possible career in professional sports. The most commonly used drugs by college athletes are marijuana, cocaine, steroids and alcohol. It is not fair to athletes who are drug-free and pass all testing to compete against athletes who use illegal or illicit drugs to enhance their performance. All college athletes should be drug tested to discourage them from taking drugs, ruining their future opportunities, and destroying their career.
Although there are athletes in all college sports who use illicit drugs, they are used more by Men’s College Lacrosse athletes than by athletes in any other sport. The last survey in 2005 showed a tremendous increase in the usage of drugs in college athletes. Alcohol had a percentage from 77.5 to 83.1, cigarettes from 14.6 to 15.5 and marijuana from 21.2 to 22.6. The percentage of lacrosse players who smoke weed…
