In this paper I will include several different topics on the subject of Drug Testing Athletes. These subjects include, college athletes being drug tested, the different types of drugs that are used in all athletes, why drug use is a problem in sports, how to determine if an athletes is using drugs, drug testing polices, potential side effects, many historical use of drugs, and two different personal stories that have happened to former athletes. All athletes know that doing illegal or banned drugs of any kind can ruin their health, their eligibility to play sports, their reputation, and their ability to pursue a possible career in professional sports. Student athletes in Division I and Division II are subject to year-round testing. These athletes may be selected on the basis of their sport, position, competitive ranking, financial-aid status, playing time, directed testing, random testing or a variation of any of those criteria. For year-round testing, colleges are notified not earlier than two days before the day of testing, including no-advance (NAN) testing. The college then notifies the athlete. For year-round summer drug testing, athletes are selected from official team rosters or other approved lists. Colleges do not receive notification for off-campus summer testing (NCAA). Testing notifications for championship and postseason bowl games may be as little as two hours prior to the start of the competition …show more content…
Designer steroids are synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroids that are to help avoid detection in a drug test. These steroids were created by a man named Patrick Arnold with the idea to avoid detection. The first steroid is called Desoxymethyltestosterone (madol) also known as DMT. This is a steroid that was created by Max Huffman. DMT can cause liver and heart damage when taken in high dosages at a time. The second steroid is called Norbolethone also known as Gennabol. This was created by Wyeth Laboratories in Philadelphia in the 1960s. Taking this steroid can increase progesterone production in the body; these include increased fat storage and breast development. The third steroid is called Methyltestosterone. It is an FDA-approved drug sold in the name Android; this drug is sold illegally. It was approved by the FDA in February 1981 to treat disorders where there is hormone deficiency. This drug is used to stimulate male puberty if onset is delayed. It also produces body hair and deepening of the voice. This treatment can lower body hormone production. This drug that is taken carefully, does not have long-term side affects, but if taken for the benefit of getting bigger and enhancing your body, there can be long-term side affects.
