Frigidity, also know as Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) is a term used to describe lack of or low sex drive in women. It is also avoidance of any to all sexual contact. The DSMIV-TR describes frigidity as “characterized by disturbance in sexual desire and in the psycho-physiological changes that characterize the sexual response cycle and cause marked distress and interpersonal difficulty.” [3A American Psychiatric Association, DSM-IV-TR.] Frigidity can happen to any woman at any age. Emotional closeness and communication is vital to a woman’s sexual intimacy. Problems resulting in these issues can cause decreased sexual interest. Different types of relationship conflict can be connected to unresolved fights and disagreements. As commonly abusing drugs use not the answer for any number of problems. Alcohol and drug use can impair a woman’s nervous system and lead to fatigue making it difficult to become aroused. On the other hand if the opposing partner is drunk or high the woman is likely to be “turned off” and not want to participate in the sexual encounter. Women facing addiction should seek help and encouragement on quitting.

Distractions from children, parents, or friends in a near by room can play a huge factor in a women’s low libido. Distractions from a long day and stressful day, brought home from work can also lessen a woman’s sex drive. Not having time for sex because of a busy daily schedule can leave a libido as a woman’s last thought. A couple needs to make time for sex because eventually having very little intimacy can lead to frigidity.
