Drug Screening Reflection

This assignment was a great learning experience for me. I was able to see what strengths and skills I currently have, and which skills I need to improve on and need to develop more fully. The skills and resources I decided to utilize for my recording were the drug screen questionnaire, elicit-provide-elicit, the importance/confidence skill, clarifying, and open ended questions. For my scenario I chose a situation where I’m working with an older man, Mr. Rogers, who is struggling with a tobacco addiction. I’m employed at a medical center as a health care social worker and Mr. Rodgers has been referred by his doctor for his addiction. My goal was to help Mr. Rodgers become more aware and educated of his smoking addiction and help him in whatever he decided was best for him.

The important confidence skill is a tool used to assess the readiness in a client’s readiness for change (Oregon Department of Human Services, 2015). I used this tool right about when we were wrapping up the recording. Mr. Rogers had just agreed to try to cut back on smoking and I went ahead and asked him how confident he felt in his ability to cut back. I feel I was successful in helping Mr. Rogers put in to perspective how confident he felt in cutting back, and as well what factors might be holding him back from possibly not succeeding. I do feel that I can improve the way I use this skill in the future. In the future I should spend more time discussing with my client why they chose the number they did and, ask them what I can do to help them increase that number to enable their ability in reaching their goal. I will definitely utilize these improvements in the
