Drug Legalization - A Non-perfect Decision The legalization of drugs has been an enormous issue in American politics for a very long time. Many people believe that the legalization of drugs will allow the government to gain more control; therefore, it will reduce crime on the streets. Also, the government will be able to control price, and make profit from drug sale. However, people cannot see the bad effects of drugs on humans, in society, and for the economy. According to a 2014 article, Drug overdose-related deaths double from 1999 to 2012, Kelly Dickerson stated that "In 2012, more than 41,000 people died of drug overdoses in the United States, compared with about 17,000 in 1999, according to the report released today (Dec. 2) by the

In medical field, people use some of them to reduce pain for cancer patients, and to treat for other specific disease, but it must be researched carefully within long and long time. Therefore, if using it in correct way, the effect of drugs for human is not very bad. However, it is unreasonable when people based on only this effect to legalize drug. Imagine when drugs are sold legally, anybody can buy and use them as taking vitamin. Then, what happens? According to many studies, most drugs are terrible for human mental and physical health. For example, in a research, How does marijuana use affect your brain and body?, a group of researchers show that "marijuana use impairs a person's ability to form new memories and to shift focus." Therefore, learning, doing complicated tasks, participating in athletics, and driving are also affected. Also, "marijuana users who have taken large doses of the drug may experience an acute psychosis, which includes hallucinations, delusions, and a loss of the sense of personal identity." It means that a normal person may become a murderer or a criminal within one second. This will be an example for effects of drug to human physical health; "Within a few minutes after inhaling marijuana smoke, an individual's heart rate speeds up, the bronchial passages relax and become enlarged, and blood vessels in the eyes expand, making the eyes look red. The heart rate - normally seventy to eighty beats per minute - may increase by twenty to fifty beats per minute, or may even double in some cases. Taking other drugs with marijuana can amplify this effect." Thus, a person's risk of heart attack during the first hour after smoking marijuana is four times his or her usual risk. In addition, increases risk of chronic cough, bronchitis, of schizophrenia in vulnerable individuals, and of anxiety, depression, and a motivational syndrome are its effects badly.
