According to drugfree.org, “Twenty-three million Americans are currently addicted to alcohol and/or other drugs. Only one in 10 of them (2.6 million) receives the treatment they need.” Before taking a look at what treatment options for drug addiction may be, let’s first figure out what drug addiction is. The definition of drug addiction is “A chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use” (Understanding Drug Abuse and Addiction). In addition, over time, the individual becomes dependent on those drugs and loses their self-control, hindering his/her ability to resist the instinct to take the drugs. There are many ways drug addiction can be treated, including rehabilitation, medication, substitution, and treatment of the mental disease (if they have one). The most common and well-known treatment for drug addiction is rehabilitation or more commonly known as rehab for short. It is said that “In the United States, more than 14,500 specialized drug treatment facilities provide counseling, behavioral therapy, medication, case management, and other types of services to persons with substance use disorders” (The Addiction Rehabilitation Process). While undergoing the rehabilitation process, addicts adhere to a twelve-step recovery format including steps like admitting they were powerless over alcohol and making the decision to put their lives in God’s hands.
