With the government being so corrupt, violence in Latin America usually rises. Corruption, along with violence, leaves innocent people in poverty. This leads to the spread of deadly diseases. In The Devil’s Highway, Urrea states that “Malaria was spreading, and it was worse than before”(63). More and more people are dying because of the poverty they live in. Their low-class living conditions means that many people cannot afford to pay a medical bill. People want a better life. They want a higher standard of living, as well as job opportunites. “People in Veracruz were looking north” (Urrea 64). Parents want their children to life better life. For many, moving to the United States seems like the answer to all their wishes.
