Drug abuse is abundant in many countries all over the world. Particularly prescription drug abuse is the modern day disease. Prescription drug abuse is when someone takes a medication that was prescribed for someone else or takes their own prescription in a way not intended by a doctor. The problem usually leads to the addiction. People get addicted because of curiosity, pleasure, social pressure, and lack of self-confidence. Addicts can not function as normal members of society. They abuse and neglect their families and friends. Sometimes hospitalization or expensive treatment is required to help addicts. Billions of dollars are spent fighting drug related crimes and preventing drug use. The top seven most commonly abused drugs are Oxycontin, Xanax, Adderall, Ritalin, Vicodin, Promethazine, and Phenobarbital.
Oxycontin is an opioid used to treat moderate to severe pain. Some of the side effects are drowsiness, lack or loss of strength, relaxed and calm feeling, and sleepiness or unusual drowsiness. People get addicted because it reacts on the nervous system like heroin or opium. Armed robberies of pharmacies have occurred where the robber demanded only Oxycontin, not cash. A few withdrawals from Oxycontin are depression, bone pain, nausea, and vomiting.
