Drosophila Blastoderm Paper

Decent Essays
Drosophila melanogaster, also known as fruit fly, is a basic model organism for developmental biology and other areas of genetics research. This is so because Drosophila have a two week generation time, are cheap and easy to raise on a man-made diet. The life cycle of Drosophila includes these stages: embryo, three larval stages, prepupal, pupal, and adult. After the Drosophila embryo is fertilized, it will enter into nuclear division. The result of nuclear division is the formation of a blastoderm. In the blastoderm stage, positional information and cellularization is occurring in the embryo (Purves, et al., 1998). From there, the embryo enters into germ band extension where gastrulation occurs. The early stages of organ development are

Benjamin Harouni Sigurdsen BISC 120 Lab November 2014 Modeling the regeneration of Gugesia dorotocephala: The window into human regeneration Introduction: The field of regenerative medicine aspires to control the ability to regulate the growth of organs and appendages. In order to control the growth and help those who suffer from injuries, defects and degenerative diseases, scientists must learn about the natural molecular tools that animals use to repair damage to their bodies. The medical capabilities of treating patients to regrow limbs or completely regenerate neurons are still a distant goal.…

The oldest forms of life are single-celled organisms known as microbes. There are many different types of microbes that are found all around the world, and they play an important role in the environment, in the body of animals, and even in the health of plants. The specific type of microbe investigated in this paper is the gram positive bacterium known as Kocuria rhizophila, which has a bright yellow color that simplifies identification. The main objectives of the paper are the following: describe the bacterium’s habitat, industrial uses, and its medicinal impacts. Kocuria rhizophila is commonly found in multiple habitats.…

the flytrap’s jaws trap the fly. When the fly is surrounded, the plant will start to digest it. To do this, the flytrap begins the enzyme process. These enzymes turn the fly into goo and thus the plant is able to eat the fly’s innards. After, ten or more days the fly’s exoskeleton is released…

Evaluation: The graph that was produced shows that Whitefish Blastula cells spend the most amount of time in interphase followed by prophase, metaphase, anaphase and finally telophase. Relative time was found by finding the total number of cells in each phase and then dividing it by the total number of all cells counted and finally multiplying by 100. Doing this showed that the cell that takes up the most amount of time is interphase at 71.35%. Although I was unable to confirm the accuracy of the relative times found in the experiment because there was no information available the time taken in interphase compared to the other cells is probably correct.…

After the rapid process of cell division and growth occurs, blastocysts will be produced. These blastocysts are the cells that are developed. They consist of three layers that will eventually become our most important systems and structures such as our nervous, respiratory, and skeletal systems in the next stage .The blastocyst will eventually reach the uterus during the process of implantation. The connection between the uterus and the blastocyst will allow the being to develop in the next nine months, by providing the necessary nourishment for the rest of the developmental process.…

Revolution against the basic evolutionary developmental biology arises with the astounding repair capacity of the planarian robust self assembly system and its automatic repair ability of its body structures. With its complex body plan and nervous system, a planaria possess the ability to flawlessly regenerate any part of their body after a traumatic injury or loss. It is capable of recovering its original structure and function of any damaged or obliterated body part even after being deprived of more than 99.5% of the original constitutive body part (Beane, W. S., et al., 2012). This practical immortality achieved is due to the presence of an abundant quantity of stem cell populations (Beane, W. S., et al., 2012). Planarian body structure corresponds greatly to its function and accommodating to surrounding and lifestyle.…

Inherited traits put growth and development into action in not only individual organisms but also the evolutions of species over time. Humans wouldn’t have evolved to who we are now if it wasn’t for inherited traits. In fact all species have adapted and evolved to be unique and distinct. For example a hummingbird that has adapted to have longer bills to be able to reach inside a flower to get nectar. Hummingbirds could die out from having short bills so they evolved throughout generations.…

Planaria are triploblastic acoelmate flatworms that inahabit marine and terrestrial environments and belong to the phylum Platyhelminthes. Though they are relatively complex creatures, as they possess an extremely branched gastrovascular cavity, a brain, hermaphroditic reproductive abilities, Planaria are best known for their regenerative capabilities (Rink, 2012). This is not a recent discovery, however. Peter Simon Pallas first described this regeneration 230 years ago in 1766, and Dalyell began experimental Planaria trials in 1814. Though there was a large resurgence in Planaria regeneration studies in the 1890s that involved renowned scientists such as Thomas Hunt Morgan, Planaria regeneration is still not yet completely understood (Newmark, Alvarado, 2001).…

1.1 Describe stages of development from conception to birth. When an egg is fertilised it is a single cell called a Zygote, in the next 24-36 hours the single cell will divide into two cells, 12 hours after it will divide into four cells, and will carry on dividing which forms a cluster of cells which are called a monula. Three – four days after it has been fertilised the monula will move from the fallopian tube and will enter the uterus. At about six days the monula will form a hollow cavity which is known as a blastocyst. The blastocyst will burrow itself into the uterus lining this is called implantation.…

Each stage will be explored below. During the initial phase, known as interphase, the mother cell is involved in metabolic activity and preparing for mitosis. Chromosomes aren’t easily identifiable in the cell’s nucleus and the cell might or might not contain a pair of centrioles or microtubules in plants. This is the preparatory phase of cell division.…
