Teen pregnancy is the leading cause for teenage girls to drop out of high school.(Kost, 2016) Which is no surprise. Having a child is hard enough when your an adult , have a good job, and are out of school. Imagine being a teenage girl in high school with no job, and little to no support. 8 of 10 teen fathers don’t marry the mother of their child, leading to less support for the mother. Only 40% of teen moms finish high school, and only 2% finish college by age 30. (22 Important Unplanned Teenage Pregnancy Statistics, 2015) Another cause for teen moms not to return to school is 25% of teen moms become pregnant again within 24 months of having their first child.So what can be done to prevent teen pregnancy? (Teenage Births: Outcomes for Young Parents and their Children,2008) Students should be taught abstinence, which is the only behavior that 100% guarantees not becoming pregnant. However we do not liven a perfect world, so we have to teach teenage girls about the different types of contraceptive, their risks, and their effectiveness. Teenagers miss a variety of opportunity that they may regret as they grow older. Dropping out means the student can’t go to prom, not go on their senior walk, miss the opportunity to make life long friends, but most of all they won't get to experience walking across the stage with all the people they have grown up around. Being incarcerated is more likely for teens who have not graduated high school. Only 1% of high school graduates end up incarcerated between the ages of 16 to 24, while 6.3% of teens who did not graduate became incarcerated between the same ages. 75% of the crime committed in the United States is done by high school drop outs.(Robertson, 2011) Students who drop out also earn less than those who have graduated. A high school drop out will earn $200,000 less than a high school graduate, and a million dollars less than a college graduate. (Lynch, 2013) The impact of dropping out is substantial, and should be taught to students before entering high
