Since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, drone technology has taken a giant leap forward. Now a days America uses drones for several different types of missions on a daily basis. Despite all the great accomplishments drones have achieved in the last fifteen years, critics claim that drones should not be used because of civilian causalities and sovereignty concerns. Despite concerns, America cannot afford the risk of not using drones. America needs drones too keep Americans safe, kill its enemies, conduct surveillance on the enemy and keep the future of America secure. One of the greatest advantages of drones is that they help keep Americans safe. Pilot’s that fly drones can be thousands of miles away. Drones are a huge threat to enemies of America and they are afraid of them, as they should be. The first known drone strike to result in a death occurred in November of 2001. Over the last 15 years drones have killed thousands of Americas enemies. In 2011, America began a campaign of assassination against the leadership of Al-Shabaab, a Somali terrorist group with ties to Al-Qaeda. Since 2011 over 110 suspected Al-Shabaab’s leadership and fighters have been killed (Serle). Adan Garar the mastermind of the 2013 Westgate Mall massacre in Nairobi, that resulted in 67 civilian deaths, and the leader of Al-Shabaab was killed by a hellfire missile fired during a drone strike on March 12th of 2015 (Regan). Between 2009 and 2014, drones have been responsible for the deaths of over 2,100 Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Pakistan alone (Martin, p. 382-385).
