Driving under the influence, or DUI, can have major consequences; such as getting your license suspended, fines, and even jail time. There are laws set in place, not only for the state of Tennessee, but throughout the country for DUI. In Tennessee, these laws, in my opinion, need to be revised. A DUI, or in some states called a DWI (driving while intoxicated), is a criminal offense that, in some states, means that you are driving under the influence of alcohol to the point that it impairs your mobility. In other states it just means that you are driving under the influence with a BAC of .08 or more regardless of if the alcohol has impaired you physically and mentally. The consequences of a DUI vary from state to state, and also on if you have any prior DUI convictions. In Tennessee, it is illegal for an adult to drive with a blood alcohol concentration, BAC, of .08 or above. For a young driver, 16-20, it is considered a DUI if you are …show more content…
These medicines, if taken before driving, can increase a person’s BAC to over the legal limit of .08. In contrast, I must add that if a person has just taken cough syrup or another type of medicine they should know better than to drive anyways because of the fact that antihistamines are found in them. Also, another aspect that I think needs changed is the jail time acquired for a first time DUI. I feel that by increasing the minimum number of days in jail for a first time offender, it could possibly keep them from doing the same thing again. I also believe that the time for license revocation needs to be increased to teach the drivers a lesson. That may seem a little harsh, but if they made the decision to get behind a wheel and endanger their own life as well as other people’s lives then they should be punished for
