The tragic truth is that crashes are the number one cause of death for people between the ages of 15 to 20 in the United States of America. Anna Quindlen’s essay “Driving to the Funeral” went into the dangers of teen driving, by showing parents not being strict enough with their kids, the poor enforcement of the law, and teenagers being too irresponsible. Even though, there are many teens that were injured or even worse killed, parents are still taking the right of driving very easily onto their kids. Mrs. Quindlen said “Parents seem to treat the right of a 16-year-old to drive as an inalienable one.” Mrs. Quindlen criticized parents very heavily on allowing their kids to drive at such a young age. One of their regulation is that teens are not able to carry other passengers that are not family members. In early January three students from New Jersey died after a terrible accident. The driver was only 16 and was violating the regulation of carrying his two friends which also died. This could’ve been avoided if the regulations were more enforce, between July 2004 and November 2006, there were only 12 drivers that were ticketed in New Jersey for carrying too many passengers. This shows that more people would follow regulations if only the police and the government would enforce their regulations that they made. Finally, she pointed out that teens are just too irresponsible to drive around and should wait a little bit more until they are ready to drive. Statistics shows that 16 year olds are too young to drive. In Massachusetts, one third of their drivers that are 16 has been involved in serious accidents.
