Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol (DUI) is the leading cause of death on roadways in the United States (1). Specifically, alcohol has several short-term effects that greatly impair the ability to drive, such as memory impairment, blackouts, recklessness, and impaired decision-making. Those who drink heavily more often also experience long-term effects including a diminished brain size, the inability to think abstractly, loss of perception awareness, memory loss, and decrease in attention spans (2). Although companies that produce alcohol urge their customers to “enjoy responsibly,” those who drink alcohol often disregard this entirely or have an altered perception on enjoying alcohol responsibly, creating a significant problem

Although this may seem as though it punishes all of the population for the mistakes of a smaller number of people, driving is a privilege, not a right, and people misuse this privilege. This would ensure drivers are not above the legal limit while driving, which would further reduce the number of drunk driving incidents. The installation fees of an ignition interlock range from $70 to $150 and monitoring and calibration fees range from $60 to $90 a month (10). These fees could be paid by the driver of vehicles, as they are not entitled to the privilege of driving, and if they truly feel it is necessary to drive, they will pay this additional fee to ensure more safe …show more content…

Additionally, to be proactive, drivers can look for certain signs that another driver on the road is driving under the influence. Several signs are associated with drunk driving, including making wide turns, straddling the centerline, almost striking an object or vehicle, driving on the wrong side of the road, driving at a very slow speed, stopping without cause, braking erratically, responding slowly to traffic signals, turning abruptly, and driving after dark without the use of headlights. If drivers on the road suspect another driver is under the influence, they should pull over and report the driver by calling 9-1-1
