Judgement decreases as age increases. Mental disorders also cause poor reasoning and judgement. According to Geriatric Statistics, on average, elders over the age of 75 have two to three medical conditions, some as many as ten to twelve. And what do we take to lessen, or help these medical conditions? MEDICATIONS. This leads me to my next point. According to the ASCP (american society of consultant pharmacists), studies show that more than one-third of prescription drugs in the US are taken by elderly patients, and the average elderly patient is taking more than 6 prescription medications every day, with 45% of these medications being ones that you’re not supposed to be driving while taking them.
If we had a law that made it so we had only elders over the age of 75 that still drove well, we would have less fatal accidents and the drivers that are still good enough to drive would be able to keep their freedom of driving. Driving is a privilege and shouldn’t be taken lightly when deciding who should be able to drive or not. Our goal should not to be getting elders off the road, but to have them on the road only if they’re safe to
