Drinking Age Should Be Reduced to 18 in the United States by laurie rose

The law states that you can start drinking legally at 21 in the United States. Some people think that a federal law should be passed that reduces the drinking age to 18 in all states. I agree with this side of the argument. It is not just young people who are for lowering the drinking age but some legislators as well. My argument is that if you lower the drinking age, parents can help their children be responsible and teach them the safe way to drink. The way it is now, teenagers lie to their parents and sneak out to parties and drink irresponsibly. It would improve the relationships between most teenagers and their parents because their sons/daughters don’t have to lie to their parents about the parties they go to. I also think that if the drinking age goes back down to 18, it will help lower DUI’s for teenagers because they could drink at home legally under parental supervision instead of going to a wild party. Traffic accidents involving alcohol are the most common among newly legal drinkers regardless of the minimum legal drinking age. A fact sheet on the NHTSA website stated that "in 2012, the 21 to 24 year old age group had the highest percentage of drivers in fatal crashes with blood alcohol levels of .08 or higher which was 32 percent. The higher minimum drinking age of 21 has not cut down on underage drinking at all. The 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) stated that 35.1 of 15 years old have had at least one alcoholic drink in their lives. It also stated that 5.4 million people ages 12-20 have engaged in binge drinking. (National Institute on Alcohol Use and Alcoholism) This really concerns me. I believe that parents need to realize
