Underage Drinking and Peer Pressure

Why has underage drinking becoming such a serious issue in America? In middle school kids do not think about things like going to a party, drinking, and using drugs. So, why is it when teens get to high school teens feel obligated to do such things? Some peers put pressure on others to fit in and do things people do not usually think they would ever do. Underage drinking has become a serious issue across America. Since then people have been trying to lower the age of drinking thinking it will help, but lowering the age is just going to cause the drinking and driving percent to go up because teens are not mature enough to responsibly drink

If society could just take a step back and look at the effect drinking has on them, then just maybe they can find ways to solve the issue. Until then society is losing teens every year due to drinking. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism posted “Each year, approximately 5,000 young people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking; this includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, as well as hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drowning.” (National Institure on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2004) Another big issue with underage drinking is known as binge drinking. Binge drinking is when a teen intakes too much alcohol and can cause them to get alcohol poisoning and/or die. On college campuses the growing percent of binge drinking is going up. Some colleges are trying to educate the students and get them to realize the dangers of binge drinking. “People are supporting lowering the drinking age to 18 because they believe it will decrease the binge drinking on college campuses and encourage responsible drinking, but others believe that lowering the age will cause an increase in risky behavior and that it won’t explain why us minors feel compelled to drink in the first place.” (Staff, 2011) Binge drinking is not only a health risk, but in-taking the much alcohol will affect a person’s judgment.
