Common effects can be abnormal length and weight, effects in behavior, small head, and learning disabilities (Source 1). There are also many other effects such as premature birth, heart defects, hearing problems, FASD, low birth weight, miscarriage, and stillbirth (Source 8). Once children have FASD there are secondary conditions that it can cause later in their life. Criminal behavior, unemployment, and an incomplete education are all considered secondary conditions that can happen when a mother drinks during pregnancy. Also, when children have homes that are too stable, and the children aren’t exposed to any violence their whole lives, it can cause them to have some of these secondary conditions (Source 2). Preventing these birth defects can be easy if mothers do not drink before or during their pregnancy so that the baby has no health issues related to alcohol.
