Youth Drinking Culture Essay

Drinking culture, specifically among youth in New Zealand is mediated on social networks such as facebook, through posting photographs online, representing various drinking events. While many studies look at this phenomena and place youth as ‘other’, and in a primarily negative light, Goodwin et al’s investigations of mediatised youth drinking culture focuses on why such mediation occurs (Goodwin et al, 2016, 1). Qualitative research of youth who participate in this discourse and analysis of the “architecture and affordances” of the social networking site facebook was used. The research resulted, in an exploration of youth drinking culture and the use of photographs that depict both mild and excessive drinking habits and the way they are mediated to show their repurposing for the sake of storytelling , commercial potential and to emphasise one’s personal, social narrative.

The ubiquity of smart phones has normalised the use of facebook (for those that have access to these tools) and it functions as a visual medium and its ability to foster the sharing of photographs has made the process of documenting social activities among youth online, a routine (Goodwin et al, 2016, 3) All drinking stories including what ought to be considered negative, from vomiting to violence, are being mediated through facebook, enabling photographs online to be the site to re-tell ‘’good-stories’, thereby initiating a form of social bonding (Goodwin et al, 2014, 62). This re-telling of stories about drunken behaviour amongst friends is developing a social learning theory in which these activities are key to constructing one’s identity and maintaining friendships (Goodwin et al, 2014,
