Every year thousands of people’s lives are ended due to drunk drivers. Several teens and even adults do not even think about what they are doing when they get into the car while intoxicated. A drunk person is more likely to get into a car and drive or ride with a drunk driver which sets themselves up for death. In fact, a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 39% of all traffic-related deaths are related to alcohol (“Drunk Driving”). The fact that so many teens are getting a hold of alcohol is an even scarier thought because when they are abusing the alcohol and get drunk they are more likely to get in a car and drive rather than the adult. Basically sobriety checkpoints are where police officers would be in a different designated spot each night and stop around every other car and check for any suspicion acquainted with alcohol. Definitely to put this into action police officers would have to agree and get it approved by the city to start sobriety checks up (“Drunk Driving”). People rather simmer down on the amount of alcohol intake so they would not risk the chance of getting arrested or in even bigger trouble with the law. With them having a chance of getting arrested or in trouble with the law causes people to believe that sobriety checkpoints are an invasion of privacy. That is definitely the drawback to this solution. People say that it is against the constitution where it says it protects against people’s rights with being searched without reason. Although people do say this, sobriety checkpoints have been shown to reduce drunk driving fatalities. Also around the world, U.S. has more lenient drunk driving penalties and that is why many other countries have lower rates of drunk driving. Due to their stricter approaches and and the fact that those countries support sobriety checks, their drunk driving rates are going to be lower
