Drill Team Dance Research Paper

The announcer exclaims, “Fourth runner up regional solo winner is…Samantha Huggins!” Hearing my name called on stage in front of millions of people is a great feeling. My heart is leaping across the stage with joy. Whether I’m in the studio or out on the football field, dance is one of the only things that makes me feel this way. I’m one of the lucky ones who succeeds not only in studio dance but also in drill team dance. A lot of people don’t realize how many various styles of dance there are. Each style is completely different from the others. From people and choreography to costumes and leadership, studio and drill team dance are completely different.
Drill team dance is excessively strict compared to studio dance. Drill team instructors give demerits when a person does something wrong like not having the proper practice clothes or being late to a practice or performance. If you get too many demerits, you can be put on probation or even kicked off the team. The instructor also has a lot to do with the strictness of the team. In drill team dance, we have six officers who are supposed to show the team exactly how they’re supposed to act in and out of school. Sometimes, many of these officers fall short of their expectations. When the team sees their leaders behaving inappropriately, they will think it is okay to act the same way. I try to make sure I set a good example especially for the new girls who are coming in. On the other hand, studio dance doesn’t have officers but our studio director does have a small group in the highest company who he has extremely high expectations for. When we go to contests and performances, our group is the one who has to show the younger children the proper way to behave. In both dance settings, if the leaders fall short of their responsibilities it can be extremely catastrophic for the team as a
