Drifter Jim Reain Analysis

The other piece of artwork named “Drifter” was interesting, by the artist Jim Drain. This artist made a freestanding abstract sculpture from a wide range of fiber material, wood and steel. This piece was interesting with not all about the material, shape and colors, but the statement the artist made. Jim Drain had made use of a wide range of textile materials, taking chaos and creating something, in his words, “ephemeral and magical”. After reading this and really looking at the piece, I get a better meaning. The items he chooses were some silly stuff animals (cartoon rabbit, snake), old varies pattern fabric, mesh shirt (from the 70’s), crochet hat, beaded necklace, crochet dolly, and materiel with short live meanings. Ron Mueck is an Australian artist who is known for his real life, and some-what disturbing sculptures. However, before he began creating these magnificent sculptures he began his work on a children’s television show for 15 years before finding his way into special effects working in films such as, “Labyrinth” in 1986. These special effects works lead him to model making where he would create models for commercials and different advertisements. Mueck soon got tired of photography and felt as if it took a lot away from the presence of original objects in the world. This is where he fell head first into his love for sculpture making.…

When it comes to art made from glass no one stands out more than Dale Chihuly. His art stands out for not only the dazzling design, but also for the aura that it emits. Several people have attempted to describe his work however few have succeeded in their endeavor. For this paper, I am going to look at Linda Norden’s description of Chihuly’s work, a video interview of Chihuly, as well as an article from Clement Greenberg for comparison. From these, one prominent writer, Linda Norden, evaluated Chihuly’s art and argued that his forms extend from nature.…

The application of color and paint in a piece creates a noticeable surface texture within the work. This surface texture can be used to enhance the general chaos or conversely the straightforwardness of a work. The use of color within the image also has an effect on the overall mood of the painting and the viewer’s perception of the subjects. In Claude Monet’s Grainstacks (Snow Effect) the heavily textured surface of the painting and visibility of the separate brush strokes creates a sense of complexity, which along with the practice of keeping colors separate, adds to the visual depth of an otherwise very plain subject but still enforces the general mood of the painting. On the other hand in Kingstein’s Christ in a Pawn Shop the surface texture…

Both of these artworks, “The Cotton Bowl” by Hank Willis Thomas, and “Tightrope 9” by Elias Sime, are located in the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, North Carolina. Thomas’ piece was donated to this museum by the North Carolina Museum of Art Contemporaries in 2012. Hank Willis Thomas’ piece was from his series Strange Fruit, and he notes that it is a “visual and conceptual explanation of the black body as spectacle and souvenir in the American popular culture.” Contrastly, Sime’s artwork was purchased with the funds of Mr. and Mrs. N Richard Miller in memory of Martin B. Rosenthal in 2015. The “Tightrope 9” is made from reclaimed electronic components on many panels.…

More recently, she has developed mixed-media paintings, incorporating roots, hair, leaves, straw, leather, and other evocative found objects” (National Museum of Women in the Arts, 2014). “To carry something was to hump it, as when Lieutenant Jimmy Cross humped his love for Martha up the hills and through the swamps. In its intransitive form, to hump meant to walk, or to march, but it implied burdens far beyond the intransitive”(3). Lieutenant Jimmy Cross has carried his fair share of objects, feelings, and thoughts. Minor characters such as Lee Strunk and Dave Jensen experience very strange and odd events, which initiates suspicious behavior between the two. In the sculpture, they are taking care of children which shows the belief that women must be motherly and calm. In the center plaque, perhaps one of the most troubling aspects, is Christopher Columbus. This is first seen while I was growing up in a neighborhood where it was a mainly people of African descent, making me feel left out do to the many differences in my life. These memories are particularly relatable when the narrator says that “I want a ticket to anywhere” (2). This line of the song brought me back to my past desire to leave, wanting to be anywhere but home and hoping to find a place to belong wherever I end up. Along with that, the small lapses when I have a taste on what it belongs when I transferred schools.…
