Dress Codes: A Social Norm

Decent Essays
A social norm that we all have deal with is to dress modestly. We are always to expect to present ourselves the best when we're out. Even though we always talk about we should be confident and be ourselfve, we still need to wear what people like to see. If someone wears some thing different or bussare, people will start up a conversation saying how weird or crazy that one is. Besides that, we're always being judged by what we were. Like in interviews, we have standar dress codes that we are suppose to follow just to seem "profession". Instead of judging us by our work performance, the interviewer will deside if you are professional enough by your clothing choice. It's our human nature to judge by the appearance, but I think it's not fair

Halket’s vice principal pulled her into the office and told her that the dress code was too inappropriate and looked too much like a bra.…

One of the arguments Thoreau makes during the chapter Economy: Part II is that people are judged too much by what they wear. I agree with his statement; people shouldn’t have to worry about what clothes they wear. In paragraph 14, Thoreau says, “Most behave as if they believed that their prospects for life would be ruined if they should do it (wear a patch over their knee to mend their pants). It would be easier for them to hobble to town with a broken leg than with a broken pantaloon.” Although today many people don’t care what someone wears, people still judge you depending on what you wear.…

The places I went on this particular day I was "free" to dress up or dress down, but this is not always acceptable. Based on my results I am "free" to do as I please, however my data was very limited so it can not successfully answer such a question. I believe that these "social codes" are both good and bad since that help prevent people from saying or doing drastically inappropriate things whilst pressuring people into fitting a specific model rather than doing what they…

Ever since we started school we’ve had to deal with dress code. However, schools have different rules such as whether you have to wear uniforms or how short your skirts can be. My elementary school required us to wear uniforms and as the years went on the dress code got progressively stricter. When I moved on to high school it wasn’t much better. They would constantly send people to the office to get a change of clothes, but by doing this they also removed students from their classes, making them fall behind.…

Do dress codes with the purpose of restraining a student’s attire intrude on his or her First Amendment right to free speech? The Supreme Court has found some speech, verbal and nonverbal, is protected. On the other hand, the Supreme Court has also found that students’ dress, although a means of expression, can be regulated by schools. Some courts have demanded the rights of students be balanced against the need for school leaders to make logical health and safety laws.…

The United States of America is an amazing world by itself, which is made up of people from different cultures, races, and ethnicities. Migrating from a small Caribbean island to the United States was a huge culture shock. My experiences were short of nothing but excitement to see everything on a grand scale in comparison to major Jamaican cities. My cultural opinions were all base on my limited experiences where, strict dress code and discipline were enforced for all students below tertiary level. However, after gaining a few friends, visiting their homes and experiencing life through their eyes, I gained a better understanding of the cultural dress code.…

Wearing a certain attire or a certain outfit will make you take more pride in your work or feel like you are apart of the team. If everyone wore something different, you would not feel as connected together as a team. Dressing in dress code is something that should be viewed as punishment, but it something that you should take pride in. If you didn’t have a dress code it can be more difficult to show you care about your job.…
