Dress Code: Should They Be Less Strict In School?

Improved Essays
Dress code is a subject that students feel should be less strict. Certain ideas and concepts pertaining to school dress code can be more lenient while still being effective. There are many unnecessary rules that could easily be fixed instead of being so forbidding. For example, the sexism and gender bias in the code is derogatory towards female students. However, it is agreed that we should have a dress code of some sort rather than eliminating it all together.

Many of the girls who have gotten “dress coded” haven't even broken the dress code. There are some girls who break the dress code everyday and they do not get in trouble. As long as your butt and other areas are not showing through your clothing, then everything should be okay. Leggings should be fine as long as you can’t see the underwear. Girls have to wear a bra, it is not their fault that you can sometimes see the straps. During the summer, as well as through most of the year, girls can no' find shorts that are longer than fingertip. In turn, girls have to wear pants and deal with the heat, which can distract them from learning. Clothes are a part of the identity and expression of individuals, and the restrictions can stifle individuality.

The dress code should be less strict in that we dress to show our personalities and express ourselves. It should also be less derogatory towards female students, because “their bodies will distract the boys,” is a sexist statement claiming that boys will be boys and that girls just need to deal and accept it. Most girls breaking the dress code do not do it for attention, but when they spend money on clothes that have nothing wrong with them they want to wear them. In fact, it is hard to find clothes manufactured to actually fit the “dress code” due to designers conforming to society's new

In “White Tops, Grey Bottoms”, Akerman described why schools have a strict dress code which students must follow and cannot break. The writer mentioned the dress code should be accepted with not only white and grey for tops and bottoms but also a variety of colors and design (330-332). This reading reminded me of my own experience with a strict dress code. When I was a high school student, my school also had a strict dress code. For example, all students must have measured the size of their bodies in the school in order not to let students change the school uniforms such as a star mark and kind of a hard plank inside the girl’s skirts, which means teachers can find whether or not the girl students change their skirts.…

Dress codes standards send home students every day, all over the country, for being too revealing. Most are girls, and on occasions, boys that struggle with the standards, therefore they should be lowered. It’s taking away from your class time, limits self-expression, and the rules can sometimes not be correctly administered are all problems caused by dress codes standards. The dress code can take away from class time because everyone is more concerned with how we are dressed, rather than worrying about if we’ll do good on our next math test, or studying for the history final. During class, teachers can stop their lesson to tell one of their students that they are violating dress codes, therefore taking time away from class and from other students learning for something that is not relevant outside of school.…

Dress Code Controversy By: Sophie Li The current dress code is a topic of controversy among many parents, students, and the social media. It is an ideology that sends out patriarchal-based messages to young girls and boys that contradict the gender-equality based teachings that educators are to provide. The dress code supports rape culture stigma by protecting those who inflict the sexual violence and blaming the victims for tempting them.…

Dress codes are nothing new to our society. Many times clothing guidelines are set up in the workplace, and more commonly in today’s schools. Dress codes are often implemented into school systems to “prepare kids for the real world” but some school systems believe that certain articles’ of girls attire should be prohibited because they “distract” boys. Are these strict guidelines fair and appropriate for both young men and women? Most dress codes restrict wearing skirts and dresses that are “too short”, low cut shirts, yoga pants or leggings, all of which are worn by young ladies.…

The idea of school dress codes being sexist and encouraging rape culture has become very popular across school districts. There are stories about protests and strikes all around the country. I have witnessed these “dress code violations” and from what I witnessed, none of these girls were in the wrong. There have been too many times that young ladies get dress coded because what they are wearing is a “distraction” to young men. These boys need to be taught self control and I should not get punished because I was dressing comfortably for the weather.…

Everyone has their own opinion on what attire is appropriate for school; some people may feel that some of the clothes that the girls wear is “too much”, but what exactly is too much? A majority would say that revealing shoulders and bra straps are inappropriate, but others would think differently. While some of the clothes people wear shouldn’t be worn in a learning environment, society shouldn’t be biased and make a fair dress code for both male and female students because it can make female women students ashamed of their bodies, which is degrading and makes them out to be sexual objects. With male students having the privilege to wear almost whatever they want, it makes females feel like they should cover up their bodies due to the fact that their bodies can distract boys from getting an education.(Since a females education isn’t as important). There has been many incidents where a female student would be taken out of class or sent home because her shoulders were showing or was wearing shorts on a hot day.…

    School Dress Codes

School handbooks state that the administration will not become involved in the situation unless the dress ¨interferes with the educational process¨. This is saying girls bodies are an invitation for sexual aggression unless they properly cover up. As said by a student participating in a protest against the new dress code policy at Haven Middle School in Illinois, ¨Not being able to wear leggings because it's too distracting for boys is giving us the impression that we should feel guilty for what guys do.¨ (Culp-Ressler 1). These dress codes link girls´ clothing to boys´ inability to control themselves. Every day, every week, every month, every year, students are faced with the authorities furthering unhealthy attitudes about sexuality. If we don´t stop sending this message to the students, these girls will grow up thinking they have to work to prevent themselves from being ogled by men. We need to take a step towards teaching boys that they should stop (externalizing)objectifying their female…

In this essay I will be discussing the rule of dress codes. I think that schools should have a dress code because many people see clothes as distractive. According to a recent study, approximately 75% of students did better in their overall grades at a school that upholds a dress code. The percentage significantly drops to about 25% for a school that does not have a dress code policy. Many schools throughout america have added the dress code policy.…

“Dress codes given the power they entrust school authorities to regulate student identity-can, according to students, ultimately establish discriminatory standards as the norm”. (Gordon)People have started sexualising and discriminating a woman's attire, and having to cover up just so male students can go to school free of distractions. There have been several arguments against school dress codes, such as dress codes being mainly sexist against young women in schools. This does not mean there has not been instances where some young boys have been singled out, just simply stating young women are the main focus. Another issue that has been pressed is that dress codes are not sexist they are just preparing us for our future career.…
