The decision that was handed down by Chief Justice Roger Taney constitutionalized the status of African people as slaves and non-citizens, and made black freedom and equal rights in the United States essentially unobtainable. These presidents Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, appointed judges who upheld and enforced slavery or segregation. Those judges then enforced two sets of laws (one that treated whites fairly and one that treated blacks unfairly). Slavery was spreading, and the states were given autonomy over this, choosing free or not free. Also during this time Abraham Lincoln was being elected president and he never argued that slavery is unjust contrary to popular belief.
