For many Americans, the American flag symbolizes the core values of this nation: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is considered to be impertinent and discourteous if any individual belittle the symbolical meaning. Dread Scott had created an artwork that many Americans believed was a form of desecration towards the flag.
On February 20, 1989, Dread Scott displayed “What Is the Proper Way to Display a US Flag” at the Art Institute of Chicago. Dread Scotts artwork raised the controversial debate of the symbolism of the American flag in politics.
