Dred Scott Decision: The Most Important Events Leading To The Civil War

Decent Essays
One event that lead to the Civil War was the Dred Scott decision. Dred Scott was a slave that moved to a free state that wanted to sue for his freedom but couldn't because he wasn't a citizen and has no rights to bring a lawsuit. The court ruled that not even voters could ban slavery because slaves are property and that would be taking someones property. The Constitution protected slavery. Another event that lead to the Civil War was the Abolitionist movement. Border ruffians crossed the border from Missouri into Kansas just to vote. Over 6,000 voted establishing laws supporting slavery in Kansas. Slavery opponents refused to to accept the laws, so they armed themselves, held their own elections, and adopted a Constitution banning slavery.

The four developments that contributed to the Civil War were the sectional dispute over the extension of slavery into the western territories, the breakdown of the political party system, the growing cultural differences in the views and lifestyles of southerners and northerners and the intensifying emotional and ideological polarization between the regions over losing their way of life and sacred republican rights at the hands of the other. Slavery was not the only issue culminating in the Civil War but is widely accepted, though superficial. Territorial expansion in the…
