When reading a story, we often do not think to locate and analyze the different literary elements that are placed in a short story or poem. In order to find those literary elements, you must reread the poem or short story in order to understand and pull all of the elements the reader can. While reading The Necklace and Blue Winds Dancing, I saw two elements that really caught my attention and intrigued me to think about in more depth. The two elements we will be looking out throughout these two short stories are the character and the setting. The setting sets the stage for the way society plays a big role in the main characters’ thoughts, behavior, and interaction with others. We will be looking at how the thoughts, behaviors, interactions in these two stories affect the characters. We will then see how the two elements coincide together between the two stories. In The Necklace, Madame Mathilde got a hill yet wanted a mountain. Because of her greed, she ended up slaving away for ten years for some meaningless, worthless, and cheap piece of jewelry because she was selfish in the way she thought, behaved, and interacted with others. In Blue Winds Dancing, the author also received a hill yet did not want a mountain. In other words, he was born a minority and instead of complaining about his lot in life, he thought about the two different cultures and decided that the low class or more simple life brought more happiness to others and enjoyed it more. Often we ourselves get discontent with either the few things we have or the not up to date things and can become like Madame Mathilde. We should remember that life is about more than the fancy things in life. Rather, life is about building relationships with
