Without Dreams the World has no Future According to Langston Hughes, “Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.” Without dreams, a person many times sees no hope in their future. They feel as if they are stuck in that place with no hope of ever escaping. If a person has no hope, they many times see no point in living. Without their dreams they have nothing to look forward to, and nothing to strive for in life. There is no reason for them to work hard in life, because in the end they still get nothing. Curley’s Wife expressed her dream to Lennie stating, “Well, a show come through, an’ I met one of the actors. He says I could go with that show” (Steinbeck 88). Curley’s Wife’s dream was to become an actress and to be appreciated. The only reason she had married Curley was to escape her old lady who wouldn’t allow her to chase her dream. Ever since that one actor had given her hope, she had something to believe in. It gave her something to work for in life. It resulted in her marrying and escaping her mother. All of this she had done to try and fulfill her dream. However it all ended when, “. . . she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck” (Steinbeck 91). Curley’s Wife had finally expressed her dream to someone, but that same person had ended up killing her. Curley’s Wife had kept her dream alive, and had been so close. She only had to receive a letter from the actor, and her dream would have been reality. Although all this ended with her life. She never got the chance to live her dream. All of the hope and effort she had put in amounted to nothing. Again this would cause many people to see life as a cruel joke, as a place where when you get close to fulfilling your dream, it all gets taken away. This births the idea that there is no reason to dream, because it will only lead to disappointment. Just like people today, the three characters all had dreams. Although in the end, none of them were able to accomplish them, leaving their life pointless. Many people have this outlook in today’s world. They believe that dreams are only there to torture you, giving a person the false hope of a better and brighter future, but they can never truly be accomplished. As a result, many people believe that dreams are cruel, as something that they will always try to reach, but never will. Dreams appear to them as only existing to tease them. Although without dreams, there is not a point to life. They give people a reason to their life. When someone does finally achieve their dream, all they have experienced is worthwhile. They have achieved something that many others had no hope in ever obtaining. By their example, others then have the hope of achieving their dreams. Without dreams, and the few people that attain them, it would be a hopeless world with a dull
