Dreams In A Midsummer Night's Dream

Dreams are an occurrence in which anything can happen. They can be nonsensical, chaotic, and the world portrayed can be completely transformed. Dreams are something that happens to the unconscious mind, and they are uncontrollable. Dreams portray a world in which the predictable is nonexistent and when it’s over, reality and confusion sets in. In the play, Shakespeare uses “dream” to describe the world of a young person who is infatuated or madly in love; it is ineffable, their world is unreasonable. Shakespeare presents a young lover’s world as a dream—it’s full of confusion, unrelenting desire, it is a place in which reality and reason do not exist; and when they awake from the dream, it is only a vague memory compared to the real world in which they exist. The young person falls in love, that love takes on aspects of a dream; it becomes blind, emotional and fickle. When a young person is in love, the only object of their attention is the unquestionable desire pulling them towards the person who completes this “perfect picture” formed in the mind. The emotions we feel are deep, powerful and can have a strong affect on our conscious. At times, our emotions can control what we do, what we want, and the way we see the world our mind has created. The aspects of a dream have an unusual affect on the way emotions are processed. Fear is amplified, despair is overwhelming, and love is uncontrollable. The Dreamer can be thrown from one story to a new on in an instant, they are left in a state of confusion and they take drastic measures to return to normality. Whatever the dream portrays as desirable, the heart can do nothing but seek to fulfill the person’s desire, no matter the cost. Dreams portray the effects of love as illogical and open to make rash decisions, and we take outrageous lengths to fulfill our
