Retroactive reasoning
Krystof Kieslowski introduced this cinematic technique of "retroactive reasoning," in which images that seem uncertain upon first viewing build up greater depth when revisited later on. In doing this, the director coaxes the viewer's subconscious mind into making the association between the images (Insdorf, 2002).This technique, works well in nonlinear narrative structure, as there the filmic flow is disrupted with narration, dreams, hallucinations, flashbacks, and multiple storylines, as it can connect gaps in the narrative flow.

In metaphor, a relationship between two things is created through the use of analogy. In metonymy, a relationship is suggested that is based on association, which implies the presence of codes in people’s mind that permit them to make the proper connections. According to James Monaco, a metonymy is a figure of speech in which an associated detail or notion is used to raise an idea or represent an object, and a common form of metonymy is a synecdoche, in which a part stands for the whole or vice-versa (Berger, …show more content…
According to him, the character analysis can be done under nine headings (Thomas, 2009).
1. Objectives that equip the characters with goals.
2. The actions, which they actually do to pursue their goals.
3. Adaptations, the behaviors attributes that are applied to actions.
4. Conflicts, which describes the tensions between characters.
5. Will power - the force which characters use to pursue their goals.
6. Values - the intangible things that characters consider good and bad.
7. Personality traits - those strokes of individuality that show how characters look, feel and think.
8. Complexity- which explains the degree of self awareness in a character.
9. Relationships which are the primary and secondary associations among characters.
