Dreaming In John Steinbeck's 'The Alchemist'

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars. In our 8th grade English class, this unit, we studied the effort of dreaming. We had read many books and viewed cases where people had decided to follow their dreams. Our overall goal was to look at the outcomes and decide whether or not it is worth it to dream. Frankly, I now know, it is worth it to dream. They give us hope, happiness and the will to persist.
Dreaming is worth it because, with the right mindset, one can never fail. As the Les Brown’s quote shows, even if one doesn’t achieve their dreams, they would of got something out of it. In the book The Alchemist the boy Santiago had wished to be a shepherd, but during his travels he had dreamed of finding treasure somewhere in the pyramids. He worked hard to find the treasure and pursued his dreams. In the end, Santiago had not found the treasure, but yet became wealthy with wisdom and experience. Dreams will always leave one better off than what they started with.

One might say “Dreams can ruin people’s lives.” For example: John Steinbeck’s The Pearl shows a happy family that is rich in happiness and not wealth. A devastating thing happens to the family, leaving the son to need medical attention. The family gets denied treatment due to financial issues and they wish the could be wealthy. They had to scrape up as much money as they can. But the family only gets corrupted by the newly found wealth, leaving them worse off than in the beginning. Nonetheless, these are not excuses to not dream. Although there had been grim times in The Pearl and Of Mice and Men, these teach us about dreaming. Dreams should be things one hopes for, but not ruin one’s life over. Pursue them, but don't get sucked in and bummed out when they don’t
