Loisel is an unsatisfied woman. De Maupassant presents this characteristic when Mathilde asks to her husband “What do you want me to put on my back to go there?”(153) Later, she emphasizes on the fact that she has no dress for the ball when she says, “Only I have no clothes, and in consequence I cannot go to this party. ”(153) These two sentences show that Mme. Loisel does not appreciate and value what she owns. She always wants more of what she owns already. For instance, even thought she has a nice dress that she wears for the theater and that her husband finds well for the ball, she is still saying to him that she does not have a dress for the ball. Furthermore, she refused to wear natural flowers and threatens her husband to not go to the ball if she does not have a …show more content…
Loisel is greedy. She desires to have a rich life, to be known and admired. For instance, when she goes borrow the necklace to her friend, she keeps asking: “You haven’t anything else?”(155) This question shows that Mrs. Loisel confers a great importance on jewelry. In addition, Mrs. Loisel is a greedy because she value elegance, and she is looking for higher class than she actually is. Instead of developing a spiritual life, she focuses on surface. She is attracted to pretty things and wealth. This characteristic is illustrated in the story when she goes borrow the necklace to her friend, the author says, “all at once she discovered, in a box of black satin, a superb necklace of diamond, and her heart began to beat with boundless desire.”(155) This sentence shows the importance that Mme. Loisel had for material. Moreover, Mme. Loisel is greedy because she wants the life centered on her. She does not think about her husband who made a sacrifice to give her four hundred franc for her dress. She is a woman who wants the life centered on her and nothing else. Her main purpose for the ball was to be the prettiest woman of them, and she enjoyed the ball without her husband who has done everything for her. De Maupassant states, “The day of the ball arrived. Mme. Loisel was a success. She was the prettiest of them all, elegant, gracious, smiling, and mad with

Compare her to Loisel who acts miserable because she cannot have the luxuries of wealthy individuals. Della sells her beautiful hair in “The Gift of the Magi” to get Jim a nice present, while in “The Necklace”, Loisel complains to her husband about not having a nice dress or any jewelry. For example, in “The Necklace”, Loisel says to her husband, “I’m utterly miserable at not having any jewels, not a single stone, to wear” (de Maupassant, page 2). Essentially, both Della and Loisel live in working-class environments with little access to luxuries that richer individuals have. Even with little money to spare, Della is still willing to get Jim a nice gift, and ended up selling her hair to get the money to do so, while Loisel gets herself her dress with her husband’s money and borrows jewelry from her wealthy friend.…
