Loisel is an unsatisfied woman. De Maupassant presents this characteristic when Mathilde asks to her husband “What do you want me to put on my back to go there?”(153) Later, she emphasizes on the fact that she has no dress for the ball when she says, “Only I have no clothes, and in consequence I cannot go to this party. ”(153) These two sentences show that Mme. Loisel does not appreciate and value what she owns. She always wants more of what she owns already. Loisel is greedy. She desires to have a rich life, to be known and admired. For instance, when she goes borrow the necklace to her friend, she keeps asking: “You haven’t anything else?”(155) This question shows that Mrs. Loisel confers a great importance on jewelry. In addition, Mrs. Loisel is a greedy because she value elegance, and she is looking for higher class than she actually is. Instead of developing a spiritual life, she focuses on surface. She is attracted to pretty things and wealth. This characteristic is illustrated in the story when she goes borrow the necklace to her friend, the author says, “all at once she discovered, in a box of black satin, a superb necklace of diamond, and her heart began to beat with boundless desire.”(155) This sentence shows the importance that Mme. Loisel had for material. Moreover, Mme. Loisel is greedy because she wants the life centered on her. She does not think about her husband who made a sacrifice to give her four hundred franc for her dress. She is a woman who wants the life centered on her and nothing else.
