Dramatic Monologue

End of May 2015. 14 year old me hunched over my desk in the back row, waiting for my teacher to play a video demonstrating “proper satire” to our Fiction Writing class. It started with a set of parents scolding their irresponsible children for finding drugs in their bedroom; the plot was so clichè that it hardly caught my attention. Suddenly, I jumped upon hearing a middle aged man shout, “YOU’RE GONNA BE DOING A LOT OF DOOBIE ROLLING, WHEN YOU’RE LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!”. The video was now about a heated, overweight motivation speaker screaming in the ear of a lanky blonde boy. The man yelled louder every second, and eventually fell straight into the family’s glass living room coffee table - I was instantly hooked. I went home later that day and searched for this video for a second look. I ended up spending the next two hours watching sketches after my first …show more content…
I thoroughly enjoy recognizing the patterns within them. I noticed things like the sequence of events, the use of the “exotic” and “ignorant” characters, and even the addition of extraneous references in punchlines are prevalent in most works of comedy in media. I love analyzing comedians and even people around me to determine the styles they use and like. Some like darker topics and more in-depth stories, while others could enjoy quirky puns and classic slapstick. While I have earned the ability to do such, I do not just shrug my shoulders and say “interesting”. I can apply this information to my own comedy. When conversing with one of my friends, I can identify what style to use and what to mention to give he or she a laugh. Sometimes I can pitch ideas for my own skits and write out lines (maybe one day they will be published). Most importantly, I was able to find my own sense of humor - to help myself and others be
