Dramatic Irony In The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain

In this passage from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Twain uses dramatic irony to show that what the King and Duke are doing is very wrong because they are just trying to get money and property from Peter Wilks, a man who just died, and they don’t belong with this family that just experienced a death. By the use of dramatic irony in this passage it is shown that the audience knows more than the characters in the book. So, this man named Peter Wilks just passed away, and his two brothers have been sent for to see him one last time. The brothers William, who is deaf and mute, and Harvey, who is a preacher in England can not be found, but Peter’s nieces are there who have never seen his brothers, so the King and Duke think it is a good idea to act like Peters brother so they can get his money and property. In this scenario the audience knows that the King and Duke are not really Peter Wilks two brothers, but the characters in the book have no idea …show more content…
The one of them got on one side of the coffin, and t’other on t’other side, and they kneeled down and rested their foreheads on the coffin, and let on to pray all to themselves” (Twain 174-175). And this shows how everyone who is looking at Peter Wilks body is very upset and people are crying, but the Duke and King are just there waiting for the money and property they will get from Peter. This is shown by using dramatic irony because the audience knows that the King and Duke are not really Peter Wilks two brothers, but the characters in the book have no

When talking about who Huckleberry Finn is, it is important to include the different pieces and parts that add up to who he is as a whole. This novel was unique to others that I have read because of the first-person point of view. It gave the reader an insight into what Huck was thinking rather than just guessing characteristics from his actions. From his thoughts and actions Huck’s personality circled around his immaturity, morality, and the idea that he doesn’t fit into the time period. From the beginning to the end of the novel Huckleberry’s immaturity was noticeable.…

    1. What is satire? How is this a work of satire? Satire is a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision, or ridicule. This work employs satire by ridiculing the state of America before the civil war and uses characters such as Huck or Tom to represent ideas or ways of life in order to show the folly of man.…

Rather, they consider themselves to be royalty: the King of France and the Duke of Bridgewater. Huck quickly realizes that they are not a King nor a duke instead he calls them “humbugs and frauds” (Twain, 95), but he allows them to have everything their way. The King and the Duke travel to nearby towns pretending that they are actors, and act about less than a scene just to get the admission money they charged. When they return on their journey, the Duke is informed about the death of Peter Wilks and his wealth. The King and the Duke, wishing to seize such treasures, tell everyone that his “brother”, Peter Wilks, has died.…

Throughout the book, the king and the duke take part in numerous scams for personal gain, which shows that political figures do not do anything but act as frauds. As the two men board the raft, the young one introduces himself by declaring, “By rights I am a duke!” (Twain 135). Seeing a need to overshadow the duke, the older man proclaims, “Bilgewater, I am the late Dauphin!” (Twain 137).…

Maturation is something that every person in their lifetime must go through in order to grow in their way of life and in their beliefs. It is seen many times that some people mature faster or slower than others. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck goes on a journey to freedom with Jim and along that journey he matures drastically because of it. Along this journey, Huck is escaping from society’s expectations and rules, since his beliefs are not in line with those of society’s. This quest to freedom confirmed that Huck’s beliefs were the correct way and what society believed was right, was actually the crueler way of life.…

This clash between families is also satirical in terms of its relation to the Civil War. The war consisted of the northern and southern people, split into the Union and the Confederacy. Despite sharing the same history and the same land, they fight. Twain also found common ground between Huck Finn and the War by calling attention to the brotherly love that was prominent in the Preacher’s Sermon. These two events brought brother against brother.…

Many authors show satire in their texts to add humor and mock society while simultaneously capturing the attention and keeping the interest of the reader. May Day (1920) by F. Scott Fitzgerald is set in New York City after the first World War in 1920 with the prohibition law in place and at the beginning of the roaring twenties. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) by Mark Twain is set throughout America before the Civil War around the year 1840. Even though both novels contain several differences, the numerous ways the authors use symbols, characters, and diction help display satire throughout the novels to tease society as well as to create humor. Different characters show the variety of lifestyles, symbols are used to convey the…

Satire has been used to criticize aspects of government, culture and people ever since it was first created in ancient times. Satire has made us laugh and find humor, but the real reason of satire is to criticize something. Satire can be lighthearted or serious, it just has the same purpose; to change something. Huckleberry Finn is a classic example of satire. Huckleberry Finn was created in part to satirize slavery and the evil of the south at that time.…

The piece “Us and Them” by David Sedaris is an amusing and thought provoking work that focuses on David’s childhood reaction to a family that “does not believe in TV”. By describing his personal experience, the author makes the reader think about human interaction and how something as simple as television can demonstrate the difference between people who merely observe the life of others, and people who actually engage with their own life and make the best out of it. Though the author does not explicitly state the intent of the essay, it is possible to catch it through his use of irony throughout the whole piece. For example, on multiple occasions, the author describes the Tomkeys’ lives as uninteresting and puny, when his family life revolves…

Satire allows satirists to critique society, not through senseless remarks, but through carefully constructed subtle biting remarks. Mark Twain wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn during the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War, yet it takes place prior to the actual Civil War when slavery was still commonplace. This allows Twain to retroactively satirize pre-Civil War United States with his knowledge of how American society would change in the coming years. In order to satirize the ineffective nature of the Civil War, Twain compares the feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons to the North and South’s relationship during the Civil War. Twain uses the instance of the Shepherdsons and Grangerfords in the church to show the…

An audience would sympathize with Hamlet after learning of his father’s brutal death. It would be heartbreaking for Hamlet to see his mother married to his father’s murderer. It would also be dangerous for Hamlet to confide in others because his plans for revenge could be tampered with. “The serpent that did sting thy father’s life now wears the crown” (1.5.44-45) Hamlet learns about the truth to his father’s death and his uncle’s deception that allowed him to become king.…
